I Write Performance Reviews and Profiles of Performers
Posted by Barbara Leavy on Feb 23 2011, 3:41 PM

I was accidentally coopted by the publisher of CABARET SCENES to be a writer for him in 1995.  Since then, I have written reviews of shows, short features articles on performers whom I choose because I find them personally interesting, and even little editorials on such subjects as how to come late to a cabaret show and not disturb the performer.

I write as Barbara Leavy, for I have no reason to preserve the connection to Barbara Fass Leavy.  Most of the people I meet through the cabaret world do not even know I have another writing life.

But Google does!  Yes, my pieces for CABARET SCENES have gotten picked up.

I have to add I am particularly proud of my feature on Marlene Dietrich, which I was asked to write for CABARET SCENES on the occasion of the centennial celebration of her birth.  I turned this into a major research project and was gratified by the attention and approval the piece received.

One renowned cabaret performer does, whimsically, link my two writing lives. Barbara, he says, is the reviewer for the magazine with all those literary allusions no one gets.
